Is my mutual fund portfolio good to reach my goals

I am 27 years old doctor and interested in investing in mutual funds. I look forward to invest around 13500 monthly through SIPs. Although I have a salaried income at present, after 3 years I plan to quit my present job to pursue higher studies in foreign. I have already invested in PFs (crossed 150000). So I am planning for long term gains as well as some corpus for my studies after 3 years. So I have planned my profile as this: 1. SBI Blue Chip - 4000, 2. Birla Sun Life Equity Fund Direct - 3000, 3. Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip (Midcap) - 2000, 4. DSPBR Microcap - 2000, 5. Franklin India low duration (Short Term Debt Fund) - 2500. Please advise if this portfolio is good enough to reach my goals?

Glad to hear that you are investing in mutual funds to reach your goals and one of the goals is to pursue higher studies after 3 years.

Please note that even though you have selected good funds for your SIP investments, the 4 equity funds selected by you may not be suitable for you as your investment horizon is only 3 years. For investing in equity funds, your investment horizon should be minimum 5 years. For 3 year investment horizon you should invest in debt funds.

The other suggestion is that for your tax saving purposes, you should consider investing in Mutual Fund ELSS schemes in lieu of PPF. Though investing in PPF is safer and the returns are assured but the interest rates in PPF are continuously falling and therefore, it may not helpful for you in case you plan to achieve some long term goals by investing in PPF.

We cannot comment if the portfolio is good or not to help you reach your goals as we do not know the goal amount. However, we have already commented that the fund selection is not right in light of your investment horizon, which is only 3 years. If you want to continue in these funds then you must make additional provision for achieving your goal of higher studies after 3 years. You should consider investing in long term debt/income funds.
